This recent storm dropped about a foot and a half of snow. Not Utah blower but not any coastal cement this time either. It was super fast velvet right from the get-go, and remained as such throughout the day even where it was getting tracked.
We started off with a fast High Boy. Thirds and Eagle’s Nest were soft and fast as well. Then gates started opening up. Backside was more of the same. Baldy Shoulder had some deep. Keyhole was another banger. The skiing was great everywhere.
Towards the end of the day we went out to the side country. We saw some skiers skinning out towards Sunset and we chose to follow. The upper mountain was sick. As we lined up a cliff to shoot I stomped a couple of hard deep turns to test the snowpack and I set off a small avalanche that I was able to stop myself from being caught in. This changed our plans about the cliff. Up on the saddle to Patsey we saw that same group of skiers set off an even larger and potentially dangerous avalanche to skier’s right of the main Sunset run. Scary out there.
All in all a fantastic powder day at Alta!
