This storm had been talked about for at least a week. It seemed like there was a decent consensus it would be strong with 1-2 feet for Alta. Nate kept reminding me that Friday was the day. I kept saying let’s see what the storm does. But in the back of my mind I knew we were going skiing Friday whether it was 2 feet or 2 inches. Well, it literally was 2 inches, at least down low, and I was not pushing for the planned Gunsight. It seemed like a bad idea. But I also enjoy nature and the mountains and exercise, so I guess I just kept walking up until it no longer made sense to turnaround.
There was still only two inches most of the way up Greely Hill. As we neared the base of Thirds the snow thickened up a bit and by the time we were on Thirds it started to look like actual skiing could be done. Gunsight still had some boulders in the gut in the bottom half so we skied the top third or so, hitting a rock or two and seven in the entry, then traversed into Thirds and found some fun soft turns in the grassy areas.
The toughest part was coming down the rocky section of Greely Hill. We both caught enough rocks to make us fall although nothing serious. It was a quad burner with really sticky crap snow the whole rest of the way to the car. All in all I will give today a 2.3 out of 10. Yay winter!
